News  - September 2022

After the Glastage in Grimnitz (DE) (26-27 July) I ended up on holiday in the glass studio of Pierrot Doremus

In Gramat (Dordogne) you will find his studio where he spontaneously invited me to make a piece together one morning. It was an honor!

Then I briefly visited the
London Glassblowing Studio by Peter Layton where Bruce Marks and Louis Thomson were at work. Just a short update and hopefully there will be a sequel in the future.

Glass Blower

Welcome to my website.

As a child I grew up in the glass studio of my father, Cees van Olst (1947-2014). So I can call myself a 2nd generation glassblower.

Because I was involved in the profession from an early age, I went through all facets of glass, from lamp work, stained glass to the studio glass. The latter is what I completely agree with.

A fascinating material, with old techniques, many applications and constant innovation in appearance makes glass very challenging to work with. Temperatures from 1100 to 1300 degrees. All possible color combinations from opaque to transparent, optical effect and so on. Glass is endless.

Because of my many visits to various glass areas in Europe and my interest in the history of the trade, I am in constant contact with colleagues about the development of the craft and the preservation of knowledge.

In some of my own work I try to work solo as much as possible. Working without an assistant challenges me to find new combinations of techniques and workflow to create a new collection. Soon this collection entitled "SOLO1" will be available for exhibitions and galleries. (2022)

I was delighted to receive a grant from the Cultural Participation Fund in 2021 for my project: “The road to Mastery”. This allows me to expand my craftsmanship by studying together with other artists.

In July 2021 I was invited to the Grimnitzer Glastage near Berlin. This 6-day festival in a friendly atmosphere with glassblowers from Germany at work and displaying their works. Exchange of techniques and knowledge to create new pieces.

In addition, I participated in the table discussions of the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science about "the innovative power of crafts, craftsmanship and design" in 2021.

I have worked as a glass blower in:
Glass Museum "The Spiral" - Diever
Glass Museum Hoogeveen - 1995 - 2000
Van Tetterode (freelance) - 2008
Hotmarks Glas Orvelte (freelance) - 2008
Hotmarks Glass Ootmarsum (freelance) - 2018
Glass museum Leerdam - 2019 - present
Grimnitz Glastage - July 2021

Since 2019 I have been working as a permanent freelancer in the studio of the National Glass Museum Leerdam, where I have the opportunity to collaborate with some of the Netherlands' greatest glass artists. My own museum line, made exclusively for the museum, is sold in the museum shop.

All of my own work can be found in shops and galleries throughout the Netherlands and/or can be ordered via this site.

Recent Projects

Solo1. I started making this collection in 2021.

All these vases/object are made without assistant. These complex structures are created by applying techniques such as overlay (uberfang) and encalmo and by fusing wires/lines in the glass.
